Caleb Cooley Dickinson: Eccentric, Lunatic or Something Else?
At 5:15 pm, Mike Ryan will give a short talk: Caleb Cooley Dickinson: Eccentric, Lunatic or Something Else? Mike Ryan is a former judge, district attorney and member of the Historic Northampton board.
When he died in 1882, Mr. Dickinson left his $100,000 estate on Locust Street to build a hospital in Northampton for the “sick poor” of this county. His extended family was outraged and challenged the will. At the trial, the jury heard a range of bizarre, irrational, salacious and embarrassing details of Dickinson’s life. There were witnesses who testified that Mr. Dickinson would wear hats not suitable for gentlemen. It was said that he wore hats more suitable for Northampton ladies.
Tip your Hat to Caleb Cooley Dickinson
This will be an occasion to celebrate Mr. Dickinson’s generous gift. All are encouraged all to wear their grandest display of millinery extravagance. There will be a table where guests can make hats as elegant or outrageous as desired.
