Artists' Talk with Cassandra Holden and Paul Shoul
Single Room Occupancy: Portraits & Stories from Northampton Lodging, 1976-2016
Thursday, March 15, 2018 | 7 pm
Cassandra Holden, Guest Curator and Paul Shoul, Photographer
Historic Northampton, 46 Bridge Street, Northampton, MA 01060
Guest curator Cassandra Holden and photographer Paul Shoul will discuss the process of getting to know the former residents of Northampton Lodging and how they approached the project intellectually, emotionally, and artistically. “It would have been easy to tell a dark and familiar story or to romanticize the residents,” says Holden. “Instead, we tried to find an approach that allowed us to capture both the dignity and complexity of the residents’ lives.”
The two presenters will also trace the history of Northampton Lodging, from its original use as a dormitory for the now-closed Northampton Commercial College to its waning years as a boarding house, and discuss the current availability of affordable transitional housing in Northampton. Holden and Shoul will also be joined by research historian Katherine Fecteau, who will describe Augie’s and Shaw’s, both single room occupancy properties that are now closed.
