Enslavers of PEople

Both men and women, as husband and wife, are listed here as enslavers. A note on spouses: Women were not usually listed with their husbands as people who owned enslaved persons. However, they would have been very involved running the household, and in the day-to-day reality of enslaving another human. They would have had similar authority to their husband over the people they enslaved. As such, we have included the names of wives where we know them. However, many people had multiple spouses over the course of their lifetimes, and we do not always know the precise dates of either marriage or enslavement. The spouses included here are those who we think most likely to have been in the household at the same time as the enslaved people listed.
