About the Playwright

Picture
Award-winning playwright Carolyn Gage
Carolyn Gage is an autistic playwright, performer, director, and activist. The author of ten collections of lesbian- and feminist-themed plays and eighty-eight plays, musicals, and one-woman shows, she specializes in non-traditional roles for women, especially those reclaiming famous lesbians whose stories have been distorted or erased from history. Her plays have been performed in the United States, Canada, Europe and South America. In addition, for 22 years, Gage toured the world with her award-winning, one-woman play, The Second Coming of Joan of Arc, offering performances, workshops, and lectures on lesbian theatre.

Gage is also the author of many essays, short stories and anthologies, plus writes a popular blog on subjects including feminist theatre, lesbian history and culture, child sexual abuse, incest, rape, and women's history. The work has been endorsed by acclaimed feminist authors and activists, including Andrea Dworkin, Jewell Gomez, and John Stoltenberg.

A frequent guest lecturer at colleges, Gage is the recipient of many state and national awards. In 2015, her papers were acquired by the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College. She currently lives on Mount Desert Island, where she continues to write and occasionally perform. Her catalog of books and plays is online at www.carolyngage.com.

"Katie Migdal's performance of Lace Curtain Irish was utterly riveting. The packed house at Jesup Memorial Library was held captive as Migdal took us on a journey deep into the memories of Bridget Sullivan, Lizzie Borden's maid.”
—Megan Brooks, Library Director, Jesup Memorial Library, Bar Harbor, ME
