in the Era Before Roe A Zoom Presentation by author Katherine J. Parkin

Before the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the U.S., one million women each year collectively paid more than of $750 million for abortions. In this talk based on her new book of the same name, Katherine Parkin reveals that the abortion market between 1962 and 1972 was an economic force which involved loans, advertising, and travel, as well as the costs of the procedure itself. These funds were organized by women themselves through women’s organizations, social networks, and even within college campuses.
