Historic Northampton depends on your support

Historic Northampton depends on annual memberships and donations to pay its day-to-day expenses.

Grants provide funding for special projects.  A Community Preservation Committee grant awarded by the city of Northampton in 2014 funded critical structural work on Parsons House in 2015.  A Mass Humanities grant paid for the 2015 community archaeological dig in Parsons House. However, grants do not pay for heat or electricity. That is provided by generous people in Northampton and farther afield who want to ensure that this town has an institution charged with preserving its history.

Why support Historic Northampton through your membership, donations and time:

Because what is preserved here is inherently interesting, historically important and not replaceable
  • Letters, account books, local ephemera
  • Extensive object collections – costume, textiles, ceramics, kitchenware, furniture, music books, medical and fire-fighting tools
  • Business collections (ProBrush, Gere silver, cutlery, signs)
  • Much local history preserved, especially women’s history

Because it has the power to enrich our civic life
  • Exhibitions - always something new to be discovered
  • Lectures and programs - new ways of understanding
  • School programs – civic heritage passed on to children
  • Conversation between past and present, through art, music, discussion
  • Public projects – making history together

Because we articulate the identity of Northampton: we are the people who did . . . did what?
  • Northampton’s history is long and fascinating, filled with conflict, and rich with personality
  • It was never just about “the old families” - newcomers have left their mark in every generation
  • The city’s history belongs to all of us, wherever we were born and whatever our opinions
  • Common history, even when “adopted,” forges a common civic identity

Because the time is now
  • The financial situation is urgent but not irretrievable.
  • We have strong leadership with real vision for the future willing to do the work needed to turn the place around

Because without your support, this wonderful local resource will disappear.

It nearly did.
